The NEDA Board, chaired by President Rodrigo Duterte, just gave the green light to the P35.26-billion Mindanao Railway project Davao phase. This is according to a Philippine News Agency report last Thursday.
It can be recalled that PNA reported that National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) is expected to convene with President Rodrigo Duterte this week. The Mindanao Railway project is one of the 11 new projects costing PHP 305.64 billion filed by NEDA for approval.
“This administration is serious, is resolute to address the country’s huge backlog in physical and human infrastructure. We will see to it that these plans will come through and will not be shelved as in the past,” said NEDA Director General Ernesto Pernia in a forum in Makati.
It can be recalled that NEDA Undersecretary Rolando G. Tungpalan said in an interview that the Mindanao Railway project would be funded under the national budget to fast-track rollout.
“We are not committing this to any ODA.” He said.
To be specific, the President only approved the Davao phase of Mindanao Railway project, not the entire project.
Pernia bared that three big-ticket infrastructure projects were expected to be deliberated by the NEDA Board during its next meeting in July.
Mindanao Railway System Phase 1, the Tagum-Davao City-Digos segment is expected to be finished by 2022 as project construction is targeted to begin in the first quarter of 2018.
Estimated cost of the said segment is PhP35.26 billion and will be locally financed.
