Cagayan de Oro City losts tens of thousands of potential job opportunities.
Two theme parks would have been built in Cagayan de Oro City, if not because of the Marawi siege. According to Elmer Francisco, adviser to the director general of PEZA for North America and Asean, Cartoon Network and Six Flags, had planned to build theme parks in Cagayan de Oro City, each worth around P1 billion.
“It’s regrettable,” Francisco told Inquirer. However, he was relieved that “they did not totally back out” because the companies plan to build in Central Luzon instead of Cagayan de Oro.
“But it is a big loss to Cagayan de Oro and the rest of Mindanao,” said the PEZA official.
Cagayan de Oro, he said, lost “tens of thousands of potential job opportunities” and revenue from the “indirect impact” of the projects on hotels, restaurants, and other businesses, as Inquirer reported. The losses, as mentioned by Elmer Francisco, include the potential earnings from construction to full operation period. PEZA, he said, had been trying to generate jobs in Mindanao, heeding policy to bring employment closer to where workers lived, especially in rural areas, and to reduce congestion in Metro Manila.
Cartoon Network has a theme park in Thailand called Amazone Waterpark, a park which recreated Amazon Forest. The park includes a zone for children featuring characters from The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, Chowder, The Amazing World of Gumball, Dexter’s Laboratory, etc. It includes 9 water slides and other 150 water features such as Disco Fountain Rain Fortress, two huge buckets of water from Four Arms and Omnitrix and many more.
There is various live entertainment from costumed versions of characters from Cartoon Network’s famous shows as well such as Ben, Gwen, Grandpa Max and Khyber in Ben 10 Live.
Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, on the other hand, is an amusement park corporation based in the United States with properties across North America. It is the largest amusement park company in the world, based on the number of properties owned, and is ranked fifth in terms of attendance according to Themed Entertainment Association.
