There are 48 infrastructure development projects proposed for resource mobilization in Zamboanga Peninsula filed by National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Region 9. This includes the transfer of Zamboanga International Airport.
The immediate transfer of the Zamboanga International Airport is a significant undertaking for Zamboanga City and the region. The project involves construction of an entirely new airport in a 175-hectare site at Mercedes-Talabaan site in Zamboanga City. The proposed site is about 13 kilometers North East of the City’s Central Business District (CBD).
The proponents of the project are CAAP, DOTC, and the Local Government of Zamboanga City. It will cost about PhP9.8 billion, and will be financed under Public-Private Partnership Program (PPP) .
The establishment of the airport would directly benefi t passengers from Zamboanga City, the Basilan-Sulu–Tawi-Tawi (BASULTA) area as well as nearby Municipalities of Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Norte.
Accordingly to Zamboanga Peninsula Priority Programs and Projects for Resource Mobilization file posted by NEDA Region 9, “a Joint RPMC-InfraCom IX Resolution No. 02, series of 2015 was passed during ZamPen Airport Summit on November 16, 2015, requesting the DOTC to include the transfer of ZIA in its MTPIP and to explore the possibility of a PPP modality for the transfer of the ZIA.”
“This portfolio is anticipated to jumpstart resource mobilization as it equips a potential investor with the details of the region’s priority programs/projects. It shall be a living document, which needs periodic updating and monitoring. The continued concerted efforts among the RDC IX sectoral committee members and the Council itself are therefore fervently sought, in pursuit of regional development.” RDC IX Secretariat said in a written document.
